At Phoenix R&D, we are passionate about enhancing the security and privacy of digital communications.
Our approach is to get involved in specification work to design standards that impact technology globally, develop implementations to turn those standards into working software code, and finally building applications on top of those standards. Apart from that we also consult clients with a wide range of needs.
Messaging Layer Security (MLS)
Internet standards define the baseline for security and privacy in the applications we use everyday. Together with other organizations, we identified the lack of an open standard for end-to-end encryption.
We co-initiated and co-authored the IETF standard Messaging Layer Security and contribute to advance the protocol with MLS Extensions.
Additionally to MLS, we also work in the working groups More Instant Messaging Interoperability (MIMI) and Privacy Pass. Our role in these projects reflects our commitment to improving digital communication for everyone.

OpenMLS
With OpenMLS, we develop and maintain one of the reference implementations of the MLS protocol.
The OpenMLS library is written in pure Rust, licensed permissively and can be compiled for all targets supported by the Rust standard library, including Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, macOS, and WebAssembly.
We work with industry, academia and communities to build a stronger secure messaging ecosystem through research and standardization.

MIMI & Messaging Technologies
We co-initiated the IETF More Instant Messaging Interoperability (MIMI) working group that aims to specify the minimal set of mechanisms required to make modern Internet messaging services interoperable.
Our role in the working group reflects our commitment to improving digital communication for everyone.
Our goal is to provide users with greater control over their privacy and communication and organizations with better security for their sensitive data.
